Local conditions
Kidlington's difficulty is that it is both a village and a strategic corridor. A scheme designed for one usually breaks the other.
When the A34 or A44 slows, drivers divert through Kidlington's residential streets and the surrounding villages, which are unsuitable for the volume and generate immediate complaints.
Diversion routes are therefore designed and signed deliberately, and where the only realistic option is unacceptable, the works are taken to night instead.
The A34 and A44 need full taper lengths, safety zones and advance signing, but junction spacing along this stretch is tight.
